About Us

Owners Gary and Linda Moore

The Holy Spirit first gave Gary a vision to open a Christian bookstore shortly after we became Christians in the early 1970s. It would be almost 10 years later before Gary felt led to do it. College Station already had a small Christian store, so we wanted to tell these folks what God was leading us to do. Incredibly, the owners had been praying for God to send someone to purchase their store!

About that time, in February of 1981, Hank and Nancy Wigley not only encouraged us to attend the Christian Booksellers Convention in Fort Worth but insisted on paying our way. On the convention floor the Lord gave us II Corinthians 8:10-12. In a matter of weeks the pieces fell into place, and by March 1, 1981, we officially became the new owners of Scripture Haven.

Gary had some past retail experience, but neither of us had been truly trained. When we opened our doors in June 1981 in the Shiloh Place strip mall on Texas Avenue South, our favorite words were, “I don’t know, but I will find out for you.”

Soon, Post Oak Mall came to town. We had no desire to move, but the mall manager pursued us feverishly. The Lord even sent a pastor across town in a the driving rain to tell us to move to the mall! Before long, we opened a very small store, and in 1985 we consolidated both stores into the mall location. God took two of the most unlikely candidates to grow a Christian bookstore, and in the process He grew us too.

Scripture Haven has helped make God’s Word easily available to all and has made God’s truth and promises visible to many who might never cross the threshold of a church. We welcome all Christian denominations, and we welcome anyone who is just looking to learn more about Christ. We truly love our customers, and we know that God has used them to keep the doors open so that we can continue to serve others.
